Abstract
As the number of women approaching or entering menopause increases, the role of estrogen replacement therapy in prevention of disease is becoming a serious public health issue. The average life expectancy of a woman is nearly 80 years. Therefore, more than one-third of a woman’s life may be spent in an estrogen-deficient state. This article provides an overview of the science of one of the leading therapeutic options for menopause: conjugated equine estrogens and its role in the treatment of symptoms and the prevention of long-term consequences of postmenopausal estrogen deficiency.
