Abstract

Extension devices (spacers) are now often used with pressured metered dose inhalers (pMDI). They reduce the inhaled drug deposition on the oropharynx, they allow a larger proportion of the aerosol particles to be inhaled and deposited in the lungs. Spacers determine also a less importance of co-ordination of inspiration with actuation of pMDI. Spacer devices are particulary useful for patients with poor inhalation technique, for those requiring higher doses of medication and for asthmatics prone to develop candidiasis with inhaled corticosteroids.
