Abstract
Persistent pain after the herpes zoster, traditionally termed “postherpetic neuralgia”, is a major problem of therapy. Clinical trials of Acyclovir, Valacyclovir and Famcyclovir have demonstrated that antiviral therapy accelerates the healing of cutaneous lesions, ameliorates pain caused by herpes zoster, and if the terapy is started early it can prevent postherpetic neuralgia. The efficiency of prednison therapy is disputable; it seems to be effective in reducing the duration of pain if it is early used but it doesn’t prevent postherpetic neuralgia.
