Abstract
From Oct. 1994 until March 1995 a study was performed on patients with chronic perennial rhinitis,
acarian and mould allergy. Afetr a week free from treatment the patients received during 8 weeks either loratadine (ClaritinR) 10 mg once daily or clemastine (TavegylR) 4 mg twice daily. Both medications lowered the symptoms score. Loratadine reduced significantly (p<0,02) nasal obstruction, comparatively to elemastine. The side effects had a higher frequency in the clemastine group, especially drowsiness and loss of concentration. In the clemastine group the abandonments were more frequent and also the need to supplement the treatment with vasoconstrictor drugs. In conclusion: both drugs are effective tot the treatment of chronic rhinitis, but loratadine has also a favorable influence on nasal obstruction and the advantage of an easy usage and less adverse effects.
