Abstract

A new amoxycillin/clavulanic acid regimen (“Augmentin Duo”, or BIS) administered orally as two separate doses, has been suggested in order to overcome the inconvenience of the three-daily-dosage regimen. The procedure was investigated in the treatment of two major categories of illnesses, occurring frequently during childhood: mild to moderate lower respiratory tract infections and acute otitis media. Clinical efficacy was tested comparatively on 437 children in the first category and 774 children in the second one. The clinical trials had individual criteria for selecting the treatment groups, administering the drugs – as two separate oral doses (BIS) and three separate oral doses and evaluating the results. Data were statistically processed, and results showed that the therapeutic efficacy was similar with both regimens (BIS and TID). However, the BIS-dosage regimen (twice daily) proved somewhat superior to the TID-dosage regimen (thrice daily). This accounts for the preference of the twice daily-dosage regimen and the developtment of a new preparation adjusted for children (Augmentin BISsyrup).
