Abstract
Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn causes systemic arterial hypoxemia because of increased pulmonary vascular resistance and right – to – left shunting of deoxygenated blood. inhaled nitric oxide descreases pulmonary vascular resistance in newborns and infants with severe hypoxemia of persistent pulmonary hypertension. This new therapeutic method may reduce the need for more invasive treatments. The purpose of this paper is to inform all pediatricians interested in treating newborns and infants with inhaled nitric oxide.
