Abstract

In mushroom poisonings, when mushroom identification is not possible, diagnosis and prognosis are based on the delay of onset of gastrointestinal disturbance. Intoxications with a short latent period are usually harmless. When the latent period exceeds six hours amatoxin mushrooms are mostly involved and prognosis depends on the severity of the hepatitis. Currently no specific antidote of amatoxin is available. Treatment includes early supportive measures, amatoxins elimination by renal (early forced diuresis) and gastrointestinal (diarrhea, oral activated charcoal) routes. Penicilin G an silymarine may have some antitoxic effect.
