Abstract

Alcoholism is one of the most frequent causes of hypoglycemia. This is a consequence of the high incidence of alcohol intake and of the occurrence of hypoglycemia not only in heavy drinkers but also in occasionally consumers. Alcohol -induced hypoglycemia is a clinical entity frequent in acute ethanol poisoning, so it’s imperative to recognize and treat it promptly, especially as the treatment is simple (i.v. glucose), within every practitioner reach. We present recent data regarding ethanol metabolism, mechanisms involved in appearance of alcoholic hypoglycemia, classification, diagnostic criteria and therapeutic approach.
