Abstract

Between february – april 1999 nine pediatric patients were evaluated and treated with Meronem in our Department. Two patients were newborn (10 days, respectively 12 days old). Six patients were infants under five month of age. Three children of this group had 800 – 1300 gr, birthweight. In all the cases, except one, gram-negative pathogens were isolated in .,Central” bacteriological culture (blood, CSF weine): Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter species and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. According to the sensibility of gram-negative strains to Meronem, all the cases received Meronem intravenously, in bolus, during 5 minutes time of infection. The doses were selected between 15 to 35 mg/kg/dose x 2 – 3 time per day, during 17 to 30 days. The treatment with Meronem result in the cure of eight patients; one patient, a four month old infant with cystic febrosis died with severe cardio-respiratory failure. Meronem has proved a very good tolerability and it was not registered any adverse reaction in our very .,fragile” patients. Conclusion: Meronem is a very efficient and safety antibiotic for treatment of severe nosocomial infections accountable multi-resistant gram-negative strains of pathogens in neonate, premature and infants. This is the first study perfomed in Romanian about treatment with Meronem in neonate, premature and infants.
