Abstract

Inhibitor-lactamine combinations represent one strategy to overcome beta-lactamase-mediated resistance. The efficiency of the combination ampicillin + sulbactam (A/S) was studied in 10 patiens. Ampicillin and sulbactam (3g/day) were administred intramusculary for a minim 5-7 days. After single doses of 500 mg A and 250 mg S, peak serum and urinary levels were effective, much higher than MICs for lactamase producing organisms and the synergy observed in vitro is reflected in vivo. The clinical response was favourable in 9 of evaluable patiens. The combination was effective in respiratory, digestive, biliary infections and meningitis caused by ampicillin-resistant bacteria.
