Abstract

Treatment of HIV infection has changed considerably. The recent availability of new laboratory tools, such as plasma viral load assays, provides valuable information on disease progression and the effectiveness of therapy. The earlier initiation of an aggressive combined therapy than previously recomanded has been shown to reduce viral load to undetectable levels, to increase the survival rate and to delay the disease progression. This should be considered as the best way to minimize emergence of drug-resistant HIV strains. Evolution of long-term treatment with optimal compliance is a major challlenge.
