Abstract

In the United States acetaminophen (paracetamol) is the most commonly used nonprescription analgesic. In addition to its nonprescription use, acetaminophen is also a common ingredient of prescription opioid combination products. This case report describes an acetaminophen-related fatality that occurred as a consequence of an unintentional overdose of a prescribed hydrocodone/acetaminophen product. While these deaths are uncommon, they can be prevented if the prescriptions for these products are written and dispensed properly and if patients are warned not to exceed the proper dosage recommendations.
