Abstract

Objective: to identify the etiologic agents involved in acute meningitis in child during the year 2003. Methods: a retrospective study was performed on 44 children admitted in IBI .,Prof.Dr. Matei Bals, from 1st january 2003 through 31 decembre 2003 with the diagnosis of acute meningitis, to evaluate closed correlation between etiological agent and the main demographic and epidemiologic characteristcs of children. Etiology was established as follows: by Gram smears, cultures and lattex agglutination of central nervos fluid, blood cultures ans serologic tests (in viral diseases). Results : median age of children at the date of their admittance in our hospital was 3.4 years (range 1 month- 14 years), with high incidence of onset in children between 1-5 years, in cold season (21 cases), male gender (25 cases) and rural arias. Viral etiology was satteled in 11 cases (mumps, rubella, ECHO, Coxsackie) and bacterial one in 22 cases (neisseria meningitidis, streptoccoccus pneumoniae, haemophilus influenzae, pseudomonas aeruginosa and TB. In 11 cases of acute purulent meningitis etiolgical agent was not isolated.
