Abstract

Electromechanical dissociation has a lot of causes, the poisoning with betablockers being one of these . The patients with this cardiac complication have a poor outcome. In betablockers intoxication the main clinical manifestations are represented by cardiovasculareffects – bradycardia and low blood presure, in association with neurologic effects – coma and convulsions. The toxicity of propranolol is caused by it’s high lipid solubility and quinidine-like effects. We present a case of an young patient with electrome chan ical dissoc iation, who was admitted with coma, convulsions, absence of pulse and blood pressure. All of these symptoms appears after an attempted suicide using propranolol. Despite of the therapeuitc measurea applied the prognosis was reserved and the patient deceased.
