Abstract

The realty of septicaemia as a particular systemic infection, in the light of new pathogenetic conceptions on sepsis recently introduced by the American Society of Pneumology and Intensiv Care, is discussed. This new conception underlines the intimate mechanism of the evolution from infection to lifetthreatening condition (through the SRIS, Sepsis, severe Sepsis, septic shock, SDOM stages) and the worsening factors, irrespective of the infection’s aetiology. The suggestion of some investigators, to abandon the classic terminology of septicaemia – though as over simplified and old – fashioned – to the advantage of Sepsis, more suitable for a therapeutic orientation in each avolutionary stage is discussed. The author demonstrates that, in spite of resemblance there is not an identity, septicaemia bring a particular, well definite form of sepsis, that compels, due to its pathogenetic and pathological features to a suitable and constant antibiotic treatment, indispensable for patient’s rescue.
