Abstract
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) has became the most frequent intraabdominal surgical emergency among neonatal intensive care units. Early recognition and aggressive treatment of the disease since the late 1980s have led to a markedly improved clinical outcome. The treatment of infants with necrotizing is based on a method of clinical and radiographic staging at the time of diagnosis. The medical treatment of NEC primarily is supportive and surgical intervention is necessary only in the addvanced stage of the disease, resulting in gangrene or frank perforation.
