Abstract

Nosocomial infections (NI) develop in 10% of patients admitted to hospitals, highest frequency beeing obseNed in intensive care units in surgery, hemato-oncology, neurology and neonatology departments. Highest incidence is represented by urinary tract, respiratory, surgical wounds infections, as well as burns, infections due to percutaneons intravascular devices and surgical procedures. From the etiological point of view there are involved antibiotic – multiresistant bacteria, hospital acquired ones, i.d.: gram-negative bacilli (Escharichia coli, Pseudomonas seruginosa, Klebsiella-Enterobacter), gram-positive coci (Staphylococcus Aureus , Staphylococcus Epidermidis, Enterococeus), Fungi. Mortality is high, patients beeing hospitalized for a twice longer period, and the hospital costs rise considerably. In the article, there are detailed presentations of control strategies for the prevention and antibiotic therapy, for each type of N.I., and also antibiotic prophylaxis in surgery.
