Abstract

Tile concept of ,.ventricula r remodeling” refers to a process leading to left ventricular (LV) enlargement and concomitant distorsion of regional and global LV geometry. The LV dilatation increases tt1e load imposed on the myocytes and results in a decline in cardiac performance and, eventually, in the syndrome of CHF. This article reviews the main structural changes and pathophysiol ogical determinants under lyi ng the remodeling process. The mechanisms by which angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition might interfere this process are also discussed.
