Abstract
Infection is encountered by all surgeons who, by the nature of their craft, invariably impair the first lines of host defenses (the cutaneous or mucosa! barrier). Preventing microbial penetration, reducing the microbial inoculum and treating established infection have been important developments in reducing the mortality associated with surgery. Antibiotic administration can reduce the incidence of postoperative wound infection. There are certain principles that guide antibiotic prophylaxis.
