Abstract

This paper is the first one in a new serial review concerning cell receptors. The first chapters of this series concisely presents general data regarding the birth, everchanging features, longevity and actuality of a concept. There are presented in brief some of the difficulties raised by the continuous increase in the number and nature of receptors defined in terms of molecular biology. Actual problems concerning classification and nomenclature of receptors are revisited. The next chapters of the series will deal with concrete aspects regarding the structure, classification criteria in use and the pharmacology of individual classes of receptors.
