Abstract
In the introductory part, we remember some physical characteristics of the laser radiation. Among other classification, from the point of view of the medical use, lasers can be divided in: surgical lasers of high energy (Watts) and low-energy lasers (miliWatts). In spite of unknown mechanism of action of LEL, a growing number of scientist, either from fundamental or clinical research were attracted by LEL, because of their interesting effects. In what follows, there are pointed out several historical aspects of these lasers. Starting from professor Galetti definition, we propose a new more complete one. Then, we review the used terminology and the main types of LEL. The most important medical applications are: fundamental research, diagnosis and therapeutics. Finally we present some more recent papers about clinical applications of greater importance: enzyme activity, cultured cells, wound healing, nerv affection, pain relief, laser acupuncture, rheumatic diseases treatment and photodynamic therapy.
