Abstract
Genetic factors that determine the phenotype of migrating endometrial cells, as well as immune and endocrine factors are implicated in the pathophysiology of endometrio sis. Genetic susceptibility to endometriosis and a primary immunosurveillance defect are two mechanisms that best qualify as primo movens events in endometriosis. Regard less of the primary initiating event, complex interactions between gene expression, immune response (inflammation) and hormone secretion contribute to the maintenance and progression of endometriotic implants.
