Abstract
Community acquired pneumonia requires initial antibacterial therapy. As it usually needs at last 24 hours for microbiological results to be available, the antibacterial therapy is often given “blind”, initially. The clinical aoutcome of the disease often offers a key for the etiological agent and it also provides a guide for the appropiate antibacterial therapy. In most cases, the treatment involves a broad-spectrum antibacterial therapy which protects against the most likely etiological agents. Antibacterial drugs are usually given intravenously, until the patient becomes apyrexial.
