Abstract
The epidemiology of VZV infection has changed during the last decades by switch of the peak of varicella morbidity from children to teen-agers and adults. This switch increased the percentage of severe and complicated forms of varicella and lead to the growth of medical and non-medical costs. That is why IHMF recently suggeste d changes in the classical prophylactic and treatment strategies of VZV infections. The recommandations include systematic anti-VZV vaccination in children and the enlargement of antiviral treatment indications for varicella and herpes zoster. The rentability studies showed that these 2 methods are more cost-effective than the treatment of severe and complicated forms of varicella and herpes zoster.
