Abstract

Manipulation of the urinary tract carries a risk of urinary tract infection, bacteriemia and possible sepsis. Prevention by use of prophylactic antibiotics depends primarily upon the knowledge of the local bacteriological flora and its sensitivity at the hospital, regardless of the operation performed. The objective of prophylactic antibiotic therapy is to prevent local infection in the operative field as a result of surgical procedures. Therapeutic drug levels must be optimum in the wound at the time of surgical manipulation to prevent infective complication. Judicious use of antibiotics is strongly advocated. Other measures, which can be taken to reduce infection rates, include proper attention to the general risk factors.
