Abstract

In the last decades, HSV1 and especially HSV2 infec tions have become a public health problem because of the following reasons: the increase in the HSV1 seropreva lence with more than 30%, the severity of these infections in imunodepressed patients and negative bidirectional relationship between HSV and HIV. Therefore, in the last decade, there has been registered a great progress regarding the laboratory diagnosis and antiviral therapy of HSV infections. The biological molecular methods have become the standard diagnosis of central nervous system infections with HSV, VZV, CMV, EBV, at present, striving to replace the cell culture, which was considered gold standard for HSV laboratory diagnosis. CDC has recently recommended that serological diagnosis indications for HSV2 infection should be extended.
