Abstract

In developing countries with a high incidence of tuberculosis, infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis is frequently seen as the cause of various pathologic states including meningitis, but also pseudocerebral tumors. Patients who are suspected of having contracted central nervous system tuberculosis should urgently receive a prolonged course of effective antituberculous therapy, because early therapy could improve the prognosis for patients with CNS tuberculosis. The clinical and radiological outcome is good after tuberculostatic and corticosteroid precocious treatment. Sometimes, paradoxical progression of intracranial tuberculomas during the treatment of CNS tuberculosis could be recognized as a rare response to tuberculostatic chemotherapy. Therapeutic considerations of CNS localized tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacterium species CNS disease are discussed in this article.
