Abstract
Fluoroquinolones treatment in children with urinary tract infections
Alongside of respiratory and digestive infections, urinary tract infections represent a common pathology domain for a pediatric practician. Urinary tract infection, with all definition and therapeutical approach inconveniences, suffered in the past few years significantly amendments, like etiological spectrum changes and appearance of germs resistance to conventional therapy. New antiinfectious drugs permit! nowadays a better infection control, last years research included a new generation of fluoroquinolones, a 4th generation beeing now in experimental studies. Those studies showed some reticence for using fluoroquinolones in pediatric treatment. Using a 20 children selected lot, authors aimed to analyse the indications and therapeutical etticacy of fluoroquinolones in urinary tract infections, choice beeing in relation with germs virulence, immunological deficiencies, urinary tract anomalies. In accordance with literature, authors used a 25 mg/ kg/day dose for oral and a 8 mg/kg/day dose for parenteral administration, with a 10-14 days duration in uncomplicated urinary tract infections and 21 days in acute pyelonephritis. For prophilaxy purposes authors used doses between 2 and 6 mg/kg/day for 3 to 6 months. No major side effects were noticed, excepting minor digestive problems, nausea, vomiting, or dizeness. All children are now followed-up for evaluation of possible negative effects in growing.
