Abstract
Alzheimer ‘s disease is a major problem of public health in the developed countries. Though, there is an enormous quantity of data concerning the etiopathogeny of this disease, its mechanisms are still far to be elucidated. One of the consequences of this phenomenon is the availability of limited therapeutic possibilities . Taking into account the identi fied mechanisms of the normal and pathologic cerebral aging, particulary the impairment of the structure and function of certain neurotransmitter systems (cholinergic, monoaminergic , glutamatergic) and the presence of some events leading to neuronal death (the Ca2+ ion being an important factor), a series of experimental and clinical trials analyze the efficacy of some drugs which have demonstrated certain, temporary and limited, good results on the evolution of cognitive and behavioral troubles in the patients with mild dementia: central anticholinesterasics, central inhibitors of MAO B, modulators of glutamatergic transmission, central acting blocking agents of calcium-channels.
