Abstract

Angiogenesis is the proliferation of endothelial and smooth muscle cells to form new blood vessels. It plays a primary role in tumor growth and is an essential component of the metastatic pathway. Neovascularization provide the principal route by which the tumor cells exits the primary tumor site and enter the circulation. The highly vascular primary tumors have an higher incidence of metastases than poorly vascular tumors. The inhibition of angiogenesis is considered to be one of the most promising strategies that might lead to the development of novel antineoplastic therapies.
