Abstract

When antimicrobial agents are administered for treatment of infections, determination of the outcome is a function of multiple variables. Pharmacokinetics evaluation of antimicrobial agents has received increased attention in recent years because these evaluations have led to the optimisation of dosage regimens. Integration of bacteriologic properties in vitro with in vivo pharmacokinetics has led to the definition of a pharmacodynamic approach to antibiotic evaluation. Pharmacokinetics parameters which reproducibly predict efficacy have been proposed. Bacterial killing and postantibiotic effect are examples of parameters widely used to define the rationale for pharmacodynamic applicaitons in clinical practice.
